The zoom buttons for New Tab Tools have disappeared. No matter how many times I uninstall and install New Tab Tools, I cannot get these rather crucial buttons to reappear. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Are you sure that this is about New Tab Tools and not about another extension like NoSquint Plus or another zoom extension?
