What exactly are your settings? Have you recently applied 2-step verification to the account or started connecting through a VPN?

outlook.office365.com on port 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP), SSL/TLS, smtp.office365.com on port 587, STARTTLS; normal password, User Name = email address.

Yes i used those settings and i don't have 2 factor authorisation.. thus seems to be a frequent occurrence with Thunderbird and Gmail / Hotmail

Check Options/Privacy & Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords for any obsolete entries and delete them. In fact, delete all entries, restart TB, and enter the confirmed working password when prompted.
