I set up thunderbird. it downloaded the first page of emails out of my account, but will not download the additional pages. they are marked as unread and are visible in the first page of my inbox, but T-bird keeps saying that there are no new emails.

Do you actually have anything in Thunderbird that is not still on the web mail at Verizon?

Is the unread mail in your inbox. Verizon IIRC is a pop only mail provider so mail clients can only download inbox contents, not other folders.

Correct...items showing as unread in my Verizon inbox that DO NOT download to T-bird. after the third try, it deleted them from verizon but DID NOT download them to t-bird. I do not want to try other messages until I know what happened. I cannot afford to lose others.
