Thunderbird is not an email provider. You will still need an email account from a provider.

Thunderbird is client software that runs on your computer that help you manage your account with your email provider.

Usual cause is anti virus programs. Try restarting the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

In safe mode try setting up the account.
