I have several subfolders in Thunderbird where I cannot see emails. When I click on the subfolder, it appears empty (although the subfolder shows the number of emails that are unread). I am subscribed to the subfolders. Any ideas?

When you select an empty folder, do the column buttons, e.g. Subject, From, Date, appear at the top of the (empty) Threads Pane?

Yes the column headings are there and then nothing below them. I tried adding additional columns and then going back to the default ones and that did not solve the problem.

If the folders are not empty when viewed in webmail, does it make any difference if you right-click the folder, Properties, Repair Folder?
