In the most recent Thunderbird version (as of 27 July 2020) I get this message from one of my two email accounts:

"Sending of the message failed. Failed due to unexpected error 80004005. No description is available. The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.gmail.com for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again."

Nothing I try has yet fixed it. The SMTP settings are the same as on my other account, which DOES send emails. Anybody have a clue how to fix this?

What are your settings? They should be smtp.gmail.com on port 587, STARTTLS, OAuth2 authentication, User Name = email address. First, add the TB profile folder as an exclusion in your antivirus settings, delete the passwords or oauth tokens in Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords, change the authentication to OAuth2 for the incoming and outgoing servers, if it's 'normal password', then restart TB and enter the account password in the OAuth browser window when prompted.
