How can a programmer learn to develop Firefox extensions?

I'm a programmer with extensive experience outside the Firefox environment. I've used extensions and want to develop some myself. What language is appropriate, what data & functions are available, how does the extension control the browser session, how do I deal with packaging & installation in my own browser & eventual submission to public availability? Plus anything I've neglected to mention. (I find it hard to believe no one has asked this question before!)

Try asking in the Mozilla Development forum over at MozillaZine.

"Discuss building things with or for the Mozilla Platform."
