This fall Thunderbird SSL/TLS, port 995 to mail.speakeasy.net failed When I switch to port 110/no security I get prompted for password and mail is downloaded. The only way I've been able to fix this problem is to RE-IMAGE the system disk. Obviously I'm not too excited to do that especially since it sometimes after re-imaging will revert back to hanging. I have three Window 7 systems running Thunderbird 45.6.0 and only one out of three is downloading mail from mail.speakeasy.net port 995. The other two just hang with the status message, "connected to mail.speakeasy.net" and without prompting me for a password.

I also disabled DHE and triple DES on Firefox.
I have no idea what you were doing, but PLEASE don't mess with Firefox or Thunderbird security settings, unless you know exactly what you're doing.
Don't know the exact relationship of Thunderbird to Firefox so don't know if that carries over to Thunderbird.

What is your anti-virus software on the troubled computers?
Anti-virus on all systems is ESET NOD32 v 10.0.369.0. I also disabled DHE and triple DES on Firefox. Don't know the exact relationship of Thunderbird to Firefox so don't know if that carries over to Thunderbird. OS is Windows 7 sp1

That article was very useful. Thanks very much. Using the advanced controls for ESET I was able to disable ssl/tls scanning and after that, I was able to download pop3 and imap emails using Thunderbird. The key was finding the control for ESET advanced setup. It was obvious how to disable. What is not so obvious is why ESET detected a problem with the ssl/tls. But, I will take that up with ESET first. This part of the problem is solved.

It's probably not ESET having a problem, but Thunderbird with the dynamically generated cert from ESET.
In case it isn't obvious, by intercepting your secure connection to the server, ESET has full visibility of everything you sent to or receive from the server, including your password.
