Here is what happens:

Software Update

Update Available

A security and stability update for Firefox is available:

Firefox 29.0.1

It is strongly recommended that you apply this update for Firefox as soon as possible.

Ask Later Update Firefox

When I click on “Update Firefox” the the blue and white bar moves from left to right where there is a pause button, and below says “Connecting to the update server…” but nothing ever happens. I’ve tried leaving it alone to run for a while and nothing happens, it just stays in this state

Hi,
The easiest thing to do here is to skip the updater and just download a fresh copy. The US, Mac version is here - https://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-29.0.1-SSL&os=osx&lang=en-US

Other languages can be found here https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

Let me know how it goes,
- Michael
