My thunderbird connects to the pop mail server(and says so) but has suddenly stopped downloading. What to do?

more options

As of the 15th of May I can go to mhcable's webmail page, to see my mail, but Thunderbird will not bring it in. I have checked with the tech at mhcable and their server is okay. When I click "get messages" I can see a message that I am connected to mhcable, but nothing happens and the program will not bring in the new emails. Hint: When on the webmail , for this account, on my browser, I saw a message I wanted to forward to my wife. I did so, from the webmail page. When I next tried to open the regular channel of getting the mail, using Thunderbird, the program immediately downloaded the "sent mail" and stored it in my "sent mail" file on Thunderbird. It seems that I am clearly connected okay. Why won't the new mail download to my Thunderbird inbox? Thunderbird has no problem bringing new gmail, which is my secondary email service. (fdsherrington@gmail.com) Any help is appreciated since we use this frederic@mhcable.com for our farm and it is supposed to be in daily use.

If there's a message that's blocking downloads, it's just as likely to be a 'garbage' message as one from a known contact. Check for potential corrupted messages that arrived around May 15.

Did the problem start after a TB update? If so, it's often the case that an existing security program is incompatible with the new version. Running in Windows safe mode will test this possibility. In any case, it's recommended to disable email scanning by security/AV programs.

Other factors could be add-ons that are incompatible with the new version; Help/Restart with Add-ons Disabled to test this.

Removing and reinstalling the program seldom fixes problems that originate in the profile folder (separate from the program folder) or are due to 3rd-party programs like antivirus.

Maybe there is a corrupted message?

Thank you. While on the webmail side of things I deleted all the garbage and kept the known contacts email. The little green sliding bar at the bottom of Thunderbird, that shows up when bringing in the mail, goes all the way across its space (left to right) but never finishes.Eventually it times out and just goes away and I have to try again. I have tried everything I know how to do,to no avail. My son, in Montreal, suggests I archive all my numerous folders of messages (I do genealogy) and then delete Thunderbird and all its little pieces, and then reload it. I did try an overlay re install, but it didn't help. Program just "hangs" in this one place.Frustrating.

I turned off all the security programs except Norton. I rebooted, which took an extraordinary long time, about 10 minutes. I just let it go. When I finally opened TB, it asked me for my inbound mail password! I plugged that in and "presto"-----it worked. The tip about the TB update that you gave was exactly right. I remember that I did have a TB update early last week and that must has caused the problem. I wonder why it didn't ask for the password all the other times I rebooted, but I suspect closing the security programs was the trick. Thank you so much for your time and assistance. Fred Sherrington
